Why Your AC Smells When You First Turn It On (And When to Worry)

The first time you turn your AC on for the season, it’s not uncommon to notice a smell.
We get calls about this every spring. Sometimes it’s completely normal. Other times, it’s a sign something needs checked.
Here’s how to tell the difference.

A Dusty or “Burning Dust” Smell
If your system has been sitting all winter, dust can build up on components.
When you turn it on, that dust burns off and can create a temporary smell.
This is usually normal and should go away after a short time.
A Musty Smell
A musty or damp smell can be a sign of:
moisture buildup
mold or mildew
This can happen in:
the evaporator coil
ductwork
drain line
If the smell sticks around, it’s worth having it checked.

A Burning Smell
A strong burning smell is not something to ignore.
It could be related to:
electrical components
wiring
overheating parts
If you notice this, it’s best to turn the system off and have it looked at.
A Rotten or Strong Odor
If the smell is strong or unpleasant (like something rotting), it could be:
something stuck in the system
an issue inside the ductwork
This isn’t something that will go away on its own.
When to Call
If the smell:
doesn’t go away
gets stronger
or just doesn’t seem right
It’s worth having someone take a look.
We’d rather catch something small now than have it turn into a bigger issue later.
