AC Running But Not Cooling? Here’s Where We Start

If your AC is running but your house still feels warm, something’s off.

We get this call all the time during the summer in Western PA—and in a lot of cases, it ends up being something simple. Other times, it’s a bigger issue starting to show up early.

Either way, here are the first things we check when we’re out on a call.

1. Thermostat Settings

It sounds basic, but this is one of the most common issues we see.

Make sure:

  • It’s set to cool (not just fan)

  • The temperature is set lower than the room

  • If your thermostat uses batteries, they’re not dead

You’d be surprised how often this is the fix.

2. Dirty Air Filter

A dirty filter can slow airflow way down, which makes it harder for your system to cool your home.

We see this a lot—especially during peak summer when systems are running constantly.

Signs:

  • Weak airflow

  • Rooms cooling unevenly

  • System running longer than usual

If it looks dirty, swap it out. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to help your system.

3. Outdoor Unit Blocked

Your outdoor unit needs space to breathe.

If it’s surrounded by grass, leaves, or debris, it can’t do its job properly.

Take a quick look:

  • Is anything blocking it?

  • Is it running at all?

If it’s not running, that’s usually a sign something else is going on.

4. Low Refrigerant

If your AC is blowing warm or just slightly cool air, low refrigerant could be the issue.

That usually means:

  • There’s a leak

  • The system can’t remove heat properly

This isn’t something you can fix yourself—it needs to be checked by a technician.

5. Frozen System

If your system is frozen, it’s not going to cool your home.

We see this a lot when airflow is restricted, or something isn’t working correctly.

Look for:

  • Ice on the lines or indoor unit

  • Little to no airflow

  • System running but not cooling

If you notice ice: Turn the system off Let it thaw Then have it checked

Running it while frozen can strain the system and lead to bigger issues.

When It’s Time to Call

If you’ve checked the basics and it’s still not cooling, it’s time to have someone take a look.

Call if you notice:

  • Warm air from vents

  • Weak airflow

  • AC running constantly

  • Strange noises or smells

At that point, it’s usually not something simple.
