Why Is My AC Running All Day?

When it gets hot and humid in Western PA, your air conditioner is going to run more
than usual. That part is normal.
But if your AC seems like it has been running all day, the house still feels warm, or your
electric bill suddenly looks higher than it should, something may be going on.
Here are a few common reasons your air conditioner may be running constantly.
Start With the Air Filter
This is one of the easiest things to check.
A dirty air filter can block airflow and make your AC work harder than it should. When
the system cannot move air properly, it may run longer trying to cool the house.
If you have not changed your filter in a while, take a look at it. If it is dirty, replace it and
see if the air flow improves.
Check Around the Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor AC unit needs space around it to work properly.
Grass, weeds, leaves, mulch, and debris can block airflow around the unit. If the unit
cannot release heat the way it should, your air conditioner may run longer and still
struggle to cool the home.
You do not need to take the unit apart. Just make sure the area around it is clear. If the
coil looks very dirty, it is best to have it cleaned during a service visit.
Make Sure the Thermostat Is Set Reasonably
It can be tempting to lower the thermostat when the house feels warm but setting it
much lower will not cool the house faster.
If your thermostat is set very low on a hot day, your AC may run nonstop trying to reach
that temperature.
Try setting it to a comfortable, realistic temperature and give the system time to catch
up.
Your AC May Need Service
If the filter is clean, the outdoor unit is clear, and the system is still running constantly,
there could be a larger issue.
Some common AC problems include:
Low refrigerant
Dirty coils
Weak airflow
Electrical issues
A failing part
An older system losing efficiency
If your AC is running all day but not cooling well, it is time to have a technician take a
look.
Your System May Be Getting Older
Air conditioners do not last forever. As the system gets older, it may have to work harder
to keep up, especially during hot and humid weather.
If your AC needs frequent repairs, runs constantly, or does not keep the house
comfortable anymore, it may be time to talk about whether repair or replacement makes
more sense.
When Should You Call Elk Air?
Call for AC service if you notice:
Your AC runs all day
The house still feels warm
Airflow feels weak
The system blows warm air
You see ice on the unit
You hear unusual noises
Your electric bill jumps suddenly
The system turns on and off more than normal
Small AC problems can turn into bigger ones quickly during summer weather. It is better
to catch the issue before the system quits on a hot day.
